Georgia Legal Info
The current laws and regulations in Georgia allow submetering and Ratio Utility Billing Systems (RUBs) for all utilities. The owners of multifamily residential units could install meters to measure the utility consumption in each housing unit and bill the residents accordingly. The owners could also charge reasonable fees for installing, maintaining and billing of the metering systems. The only restrictions are that the terms of the charges should be disclosed to the tenants prior to establishment of a lease contract.
Billing Service Providers are required to apply and be approved for licenses from a regulatory agency prior to starting the servicing of the client’s billing accounts. This requirement applies to several different areas of the USA. The license has to remain current and valid while doing business in these regions. The information on this page is deemed to be accurate but updates may occur at any time. Please Contact Multifamily Utility Company with your specific questions about your area of service.
Under the 2010 Water Stewardship Act all new multi-unit residential buildings and certain retail and light industrial buildings in the state of Georgia that were granted a construction permit after July 1, 2012 are required to install submeters. All tenants in buildings that were built after this date must be charged for water and wastewater use based on their measured usage. And though not required, the act also encourages property owners of existing multi-unit buildings to install and start using submeters. As one of the leading utility submetering and billing companies in the state of Georgia Multifamily Utility will work with you to ensure you pick the best equipment for your project. We work with several manufactures which allows us to design and install a system for any situation. We work closely with state and local regulatory departments to ensure every system we design is compliant. While water conservation is the most well known benefit associated with submetering, there are also many other benefits including but not limited to reduced operational costs, stabilized rents, increased property value and improved cash flow.
